WHITHER THELATEST.NET? It started out as a
cooperative project among several journalists nationwide to pool local
stories with a national significance in firsthand reports on one
website. TheLatest.Net was designed as a way for you to get the latest news in fast, summarized form. We have shortened our summaries to two sentences, now including links to more information when possible. And we have consolidated all operations in Houston, Texas. Houston, the fourth largest city in the nation, is increasingly in the news, and we intend to cover it in depth. But we maintain contacts around the nation for covering all aspects of news. No pop-up ads. No hype. The point of view remains that of political Independents; no beholding to the right or left, Democrat or Republican, economic top or bottom, liberal or conservative. But over the years, most of TheLatest's contributors dropped out. It has been since 1999, after all, a period of decreasing profits and instability for consumer news Internet sites. And in the news business as a whole, unless you're working in cable TV, there have been cutbacks everywhere. A while back, I took over as editor of TheLatest.Net and changed the course of the website very little. It remains dedicated to the Independent view of life and politics. We intend to continue in this vein. I renew our commitment to keeping you informed with mainstream news, Independent views and unusual opinions. We intend to generate news unavailable anywhere else. We hope you'll continue to check back with us. To those who have visited us before, thank you very much. You are the heart of what we're doing.
