ASSESSING THE FUTURE TERRORIST THREAT ARE OUR FOOD SUPPLIES PROTECTED? The Department of Agriculture is taking strong measures to protect the US food supply. Farmers are being asked to wear protective footwear to protect against foot and mouth disease in animals; they're asked to keep chemicals in safe places to prevent theft; they're asked to inspect animals daily. There are still scientists who believe an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Britain and Western Europe earlier this year may have been initiated by terrorists as an experiment in biological warfare, though there are several possible explanations for the outbreak. The USDA has reportedly asked for millions of
federal dollars to fund further security for private and public
agricultural projects. ARE OUR WATER SUPPLIES PROTECTED? The National Guard, state, county and local police are protecting some of the nation's largest water supplies, including dams and rivers, mostly in the Northeast. So far, eight states have placed the Guard on permanent sentry duty. It is not true that all US water supplies are protected. But most if not all companies and governments controlling water supplies have stepped up security measures since September. -- Mike Shiloh from various sources |
