"To the Taliban: Give us Osama bin Laden or we'll send your women to college!"

YOUR COMMENTS:
I agree with you regarding Clinton's predilection to "leading by consensus." Do you agree with me that President Bush is skating near that thin ice when he only acts after receiving the nod of approval from other nations?

I had a wonderful dream last night; Bill O'Rilley was President, and Dr Laura was Vice-President.

You're ready to spread blame across politicians, especially Clinton, but you don't understand that no one could have seen the New York attacks coming. -- BrikHaus, NH

EDITOR'S REPLY: Leading by consensus using poll results, as the Clinton administration did, is adequate in some eras, but there are often times a leader rather than a follower of polls based on uninformed public opinion is needed.

Such a political approach may go down, in the wake of 9/11, as the great political failure of the 1990s. We often count on our leaders to know more than we do and to lead accordingly. And there is no way American politicians didn't see terrorist attacks on America coming. Politicians: talk to us plainly, convince us of national need and we will respond.

Tell us nothing -- or tell us something different every day, as President Clinton did, so much so that we're confused -- and we can only assume that things are okay, based on trust in our leaders.

Until hell breaks loose. -- MS

You're the only website I've seen to present alternatives to the news being crammed down our throats by the TV people.  Thanks. -- xx, FL

EDITORS NOTE: Thank you. During these troublesome times, it's as important what we don't print on TheLatest.Net as what we do print. TheLatest.Net did not note that certain radio stations are banning certain songs in the aftermath of 9/11; did not report that a Dallas-area boy predicted the 9/11 disasters the day before; did not report or print a photo showing satan's face among the smoke of the Trade Center; did not print Emails calling for a "light a candle" night so that the nation's glow could be photographed by satellite; refused to print the photo of a man standing atop the Trade Center moments before a jet slammed into it; we did not print reports that Israelis were told in advance not to be in the Trade Center on September 11th.

These things are now proven to have been hoaxes or to contain false information. We did print the now-famous fake Nostradamus quote and the curious "11-connection" in our "Comments" section, credited to the person who Emailed it.

We understand that right-minded people around the world are looking for reasons of any kind as to why democracy and the US are now under attack. And we continue to do our best to prospect for facts, discarding rumors and questionable stories. -- MS

You scooped Drudge with the news of Brits engaging Taliban troops!  Congratulations!  Your site is getting hot!  Keep it up!

How I wish I were thirty years younger.  I'd be there! -- Viejo, TX

FROM SAN DIEGO: A banquet bartender at the San Diego Paradise Point Resort wrote to TheLatest.Net saying she was so distraught by the September 11th massacres that she's turning over a portion of the tips she makes to the Red Cross in memory of those who died.

"I'm hoping that you can help me with this campaign" she calls Tips Against Terrorism. She calls on others in the hospitality industry to donate a portion of their tips or perhaps an hour's pay to contribute to this cause.

"If every tipped employee.. would (donate to the Red Cross  proceeds of) one shift, it might help make a difference."

Most importantly, "It sure helped me cope with my feelings toward this tragedy." -- KL, CA (edited for space)

How could this have happened? ...We're spending too much time worrying... -- Gill, VA (edited for space)

We are getting a clearer picture of which nations are our friends and which are our enemys.  Egypt, for example , is clearly our enemy.  I would like to see the White House release a list of the nations that we have given money to over the past five years.  I know that Egypt got a lot.  I understand that Afganistan did to.  Are we just a nation of fools, or are we cowards giving our lunch money to the school bully?

-- Viejo, TX

We pay the price for freedom. We should ask ourselves: Should we offer the freedom to work,
to travel and to live in our countries to all
persons? Or should we step back a little and exclude people whose
cultural level is too different from ours? -- Bohm

I'm from the Mideast and I can tell you Afghanis are stupid people, but good fighters. If we set our minds to it, we can defeat the Taliban and liberate the people from a fanatical, murderous regime. -- AL, CA

During the sixties, I spent quite a bit if time in Lebanon.  I knew a number of Lebanese citizens, and thought that of all middle-easterners, they were culturally most like Americans .   They are a democtratic-minded people.

Now I see that Lebanon is on most of the lists making the news site rounds; lists of nations we should attack.  The terror that flows from Lebanon is PLO and Syrian planned and delivered.  These forces conspired to make it appear that Lebanon was in a civil war, then marched in pretending to be peace-makers and conquered the country.

The U.S. let it happen in spite of pleas for help from the Lebanese, and when the Syrians and the PLO murdered several hundred of our Marine peacekeepers, we tucked in our tail and went home.  In the name of those dead Marines, why don't we start our crusade by making Lebanon free, and at the same time, eradicate a major seat of terrorism?   -- Viejo, TX

I'm afraid, once again, we are planning too little, too late.  Destroying training camps and killing a few leaders won't do the job.  Ruthlessly conquering rogue nations, such as Yemen, Libya, Syria, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, etc, and providing full support for democratic elections will. It's now a small world, and we have no choice but to be involved.

And what will we do about the US citizens (and legal immigrants) who support IRA and PLO terror?  Will we prosecute them with the same vigor?  Are we really going to wipe out terrorism?  Or is this just another case of frustrated anger that will burn out after hanging an example?

By the way, you were correct about the gas prices. I believed CNN, who published reports of price gouging as actually happening.  Turns out they were wrong, you were right.  Good job. --Viejo, TX

We cannot let them go unpunished for what they did to the innocent. -- Ricardo

Osama bin Laden reminds me of Lee Harvey Oswald, a patsy for a great crime who was set up by forces much larger than he can imagine. -- KillLaden, IL

The military have our full support. Go. -- xx, FL

BIN LADEN CALLED HIS MOTHER TWO DAYS BEFORE 9/11, TOLD HER "SOMETHING BIG" WAS COMING

THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF: WHAT WE'RE UP AGAINST IN THE NEW FIGHT ON TERRORISM

THE LATEST:

PRIME MINISTER TONY BLAIR IS DECLARING WAR ON THE TALIBAN LEADERSHIP IN AFGHANISTAN.

TERRORIST OSAMA BIN LADEN CALLED HIS MOM just before the attacks on the US September 11th, telling her "In two days you're going to hear big news and you'e not going to hear from me for a while." The phone call was taped by an unnamed foreign intelligence service, according to NBC News.

MEANWHILE, PRESIDENT BUSH SAYS SIX-MILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN FROZEN IN THE US, money believed to be linked to terrorists and terrorist organizations.

ONE PERSON -- POSSIBLY TWO PEOPLE -- have been arrested in Virginia, charged with helping terrorists gain false identification

THE FBI BELIEVES ITS FOILED PLANS BY A TERRORIST GROUP TO RAM A TRUCK-BOMB INTO THE SEARS TOWER, according to ABC News. Five people have been arrested in connection to the plot, the Bureau says. Among their possessions: computer disks with information about the Chicago landmark. At least four of those arrested had fake licenses to drive trucks carrying hazardous material.

SOME OF THOSE WHO UNSELFISHLY GAVE BLOOD FOLLOWING THE ATTACKS ON THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AND THE PENTAGON ARE GETTING BAD NEWS -- the blood they gave contains evidence of HIV, Hepatitis C or other diseases.

EX-PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON HAS BEEN DISBARRED FROM PRACTICING LAW BEFORE THE SUPREME COURT. It was the first decision from the new court term that began today, the First Monday of October. The justices took a moment of silence before case consideration to remember those killed on 9/11. Clinton will now have to show why he shouldn't be permanently disbarred from practicing before the high court.

THE TROUBLE WITH TRYING TO SET UP A US-LED ANTI-TERRORISM COALITION: Moderate Moslem rulers may be more afraid of terrorists than of the United States.

THERE ARE NEW WARNINGS SUNDAY ABOUT POSSIBLE FORTHCOMING ATTACKS ON AMERICANS both in the United States and, especially, abroad.

FOURTEEN TERRORIST PILOTS ARE SAID TO BE STILL ON THE LOOSE. -- The Times of London

THERE ARE INTELLIGENCE REPORTS THAT THE MAJORITY OF MAJOR US CITIES MAY HAVE BEEN TARGETS OF TERRORISTS ON SEPTEMBER 11TH, INCLUDING LOS ANGELES, HOUSTON, DALLAS, CHICAGO, SEATTLE AND ATLANTA. In other words, instead of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon as the focus of American attention that day, had terrorists had their way it could have seemed to be an invasion of the United States. That, according to intelligence sources as quoted by Fox News, could have been the intention of the terrorists behind the 9/11 attacks.
Fox News Network attributes to "intelligence sources" news that Seattle's famous Space Needle, Chicago's Sears Tower, the Transamerica building in San Francisco, the energy corridors of Houston and Dallas and unspecified areas of Los Angeles and Atlanta were "possibly" targeted by terrorists on September 11th for "some kind of attacks," by "associates of the World Trade Center terrorists."  The FAA's order to ground all planes that day may have stifled such attacks, it's implied.
Most disturbing, the "intelligence sources" aren't specific whether the "planned attacks" were definitely for September 11th or may have been intended for the "days and weeks" following.

Practically all experts are saying it's "not a matter of if but of when and of what magnitude" the US will suffer a terrorist attack using chemical or more likely biological weapons that could wipe out tens of thousands of Americans. What the US needs, they say, is better "threat assessment."
Ashcroft said the FBI is following up more than 115-thousand tips about possible terrorist activities, and is "focused on prevention" of further attacks in America.
The State Department late Friday urged Americans around the world to "do what is deemed necessary" to ensure personal safety as more terrorist attacks could be on the way.
AND AGAIN SUNDAY, THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION WARNED OF NEW ATTACKS. The theory going around Washington: Bin Laden is, like a chess player, thinking three moves ahead and has terrorists in place in America ready for a second and even third wave of attacks. The second attack will take place when the US military moves on Afghanistan, the theory goes.

BIN LADEN HAS ORDERED HIS SYPHILIS-ADDLED MINIONS TO PREPARE FOR NEW "SPECTACULAR" STRIKES AGAINST THE US.

Editorial Comment: Okay, it's just my theory that the bin Laden  people have syphilis-ordered brain disease. People theorized in the 1940s  that Hitler had that same disease, and how else can you explain the madness of destroying innocent women, children and men -- in 1939 or on 9/11/2001? Or the madness of attempting to kill thousands more innocents in a followup attack? -- MS

FOR THE FIRST TIME, A US GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SAYS THE US IS "PREPARED" TO HANDLE BIOLOGICAL OR CHEMICAL TERRORIST ATTACKS. On CBS-TV's Sunday "60 Minutes," Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson reveals plans to remedy such attacks.

STILL, THERE ARE SOME WHO SAY THE US ISN'T READY FOR A NEW TERRORIST ATTACK, especially of the biological or chemical kind. Is the US prepared for such an attack? A recent report says no.

THE NATIONAL SECURITY AGENCY IS GETTING SO MANY TIPS AND SO MUCH INFORMATION FROM INTELLIGENCE SOURCES THAT THEY'RE HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING TRACK.

ISRAELIS KILLED THREE PALESTINIANS in fighting Sunday as a tenuous cease-fire continues.

MORE THAN FOUR-THOUSAND PROTESTERS MARCHED ON WASHINGTON SATURDAY calling on the US not to make war against terrorist leaders. Eleven protesters were arrested. Many of those who marched were already planning to demonstrate in Washington against World Trade Organization meetings that were cancelled in the wake of the 9/11 tragedies.

FORMER TREASURY SECRETARY NICHOLAS BRADY SAYS THE US IS "DEFINITELY" IN A RECESSION NOW.  "People's confidence has been wrecked," he says. "But people should keep their confidence up so that we don't get into a deeper recession than might have happened and let terrorists' plans come to fruition." The slowdown began, he said Saturday, more than a year ago and has only been exacerbated by the terrorist attacks, not brought on by them. Most economists would appear to agree.

NEW EMERGENCY LAWS IN GREAT BRITAIN ALLOWING THE GOVERNMENT TO "INDEFINITELY" DETAIN AND THEN POSSIBLY DEPORT "ASYLUM SEEKERS" COULD LEAD TO THE LOSS OF THOUSANDS OF BRITISHERS, according to the British Independent. Longtime Brits must be anguishing about this, huh?

PRESIDENT BUSH AND FIRST LADY LAURA MET LAST WEEK WITH THE WIDOW OF A MAN CONSIDERED A HERO IN THE 9/11 ATTACKS. The president is said to have wept while holding the widow of Todd Beamer, who is reportedly one of those who attacked the hijackers on the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT NOW CONFIRMS THAT US AND BRITISH SPECIAL FORCES ARE ON AFGHAN SOIL on reconnaissance missions as part of an effort to locate terrorist Osama bin Laden.

TERRORIST BIN LADEN FRIDAY DENIED HE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE 9/11 ATTACKS. In a statement released to Pakistani officials, he suggested that Jews may have set up the attacks --  Jewish residents of Florida who are still upset that George W. Bush "stole" the 2000 election from Al Gore. It is suspected that bin Laden is crazy like a fox -- but crazy nevertheless.

UH OH, NEWS FLASH: Clinton administration policies are in some ways responsible for the current state of terror in the US and around the world, especially with regard to Israeli-Palestinian relations. Secretary of State Colin Powell implied such Friday.

There are some intelligence experts who say Osama bin Laden has developed a relationship with Palestinian terrorists, along with many other terrorist organizations around the world.

IN A BINDING RESOLUTION FRIDAY, THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL APPROVED THE WORLDWIDE FREEZING OF ALL FUNDS SUSPECTED TO BE CONTROLLED BY TERRORISTS.

KING ABDULLAH OF JORDAN MET WITH PRESIDENT BUSH AT THE WHITE HOUSE FRIDAY, condemning terrorist acts, affirming Bush's war on terrorism as a "fight against evil."

IN A NEW CNN-TIME MAGAZINE POLL, more than half of those asked believe there will be another terrorist attack on America, but it won't be in the area where they live. Only one-third are stocking up on food and water. But the majority say they're increasing contact with family members.

IN LONDON, POLICE HAVE REARRESTED A MAN SUSPECTED OF TRAINING TERRORIST PILOTS. He's charged with document fraud and its expected he'll be charged with multiple counts of murder; he's been in custody for a week but has now been rearrested on behalf of the United States, to which he's to be turned over soon. He's said to be "closely" linked to the 9/11 hihjackers.

PRESIDENT BUSH FRIDAY OUTLINED A PORTION OF THE WAR ON TERRORISM, which he said will include increased, wide-ranging covert operations and intelligence-gathering, partnering the US with international intelligence efforts. There may or may not be "conventional" warfare used, the president said. Also: tougher immigration laws, cyber-attacks on terrorist cells, confiscation of money suspected to be used in terrorism and a "new" view of how the US patrols its borders.

SAUDI ARABIA APPEARS READY TO ALLOW THE US TO COMMAND A NEW AIRBASE ON SAUDI SOIL. US sources say they've gotten the go-ahead to use an airbase completed this past summer for operations against terrorists.

THE FEDERAL RESERVE OPEN MARKET COMMITTEE WILL MEET TUESDAY. There could be yet another interest rate cut; if there is, it could plunge interest rates to a level not seen since the early 1960s.

THE THIRD QUARTER OF 2001 WILL GO DOWN AS THE WORST FOR THE ECONOMY SINCE 1993.

IT'S BEEN A YEAR SINCE THE PALESTINIAN UPRISING AGAINST ISRAELIS BEGAN. It began when Palestinians began destroying property and throwing stones after seeing now-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon leaving an area considered holy by both Israelis and Palestinians.

STRANGE COINCIDENCE? Some Dutch officials are upset about an Islamic calendar printed in Egypt in May that features as an illustration for the month of September a graphic showing a passenger plane crashing with the Statue of Liberty and New York City in the background, according to the newspaper De Telegraaf, as reported by NewsMax.com.

A BILL HAS BEEN INTRODUCED IN CONGRESS ALLOWING COMMERCIAL AIRLINE PILOTS TO CARRY GUNS WHILE ON THE JOB.

SOME NEW YORKERS NOW BELIEVE THEIR CITY IS A "POLICE STATE." "This is how it is because this is how it has to be."

RICH FAMILY MEMBERS OF TERRORIST OSAMA BIN LADEN HAVE BEEN QUIETLY FLEEING THE US -- IN TERROR? -- OVER FEARS THEY COULD BE TARGETS OF US CITIZENS' APPRAISALS FOR THE SEPTEMBER 11TH ATTACKS. There are reports the millionaire Saudi mass murderer may have 25 or more relatives living in the Boston area alone, including a Harvard Law School graduate and a nephew who's said to have left the University of New Hampshire, vowing to return, according to the British Independent. Most of those in the bin Laden family have disavowed Osama's suicide-murder tactics. Many of bin Laden's family members left September 18th after realizing that America may not be a great place for them to be right now, following the nearly seven-thousand deaths in the World Trade Center and Pentagon suicide-destruction. Ironically, the bin Ladens left on a private jet from Logan Airport in Boston, the Independent reports. It was from Logan that two of the September 11th hijacked-jets flew.

A NEW INTERNET VIRUS IS MAKING THE ROUNDS: WTC.EXE, which carries the subject line: "Peace between America and Islam." The Email poses as a poll question; the authors of the virus obviously hope it will successfully destroy portions of many computers' harddrives because lots of people will open it because of the emotional subject matter. The virus destroys files and overwrites web pages on a computer harddrive. So far, distribution of the virus is low, CBS News reports.

INTERNET HACKERS HAVE HACKED UP THE AGHANI GOVERNMENT WEBSITE. But the hackers were mistaken that the website was run by the bin Laden-harboring Taliban. It's run by the anti-Taliban forces, the website says.

OSAMA BIN LADEN:

From Brown University anthropologist William O. Beeman's 1998 essay, "Of Bombings In Afghanistan..." from the Brown University Op-Ed Service: "To the north of Afghanistan is one of the wealthiest oil fields in the world - on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea in the new republics of the former Soviet Union. American oil  companies are involved in an oil boom larger than any in the last 40 years in this region. Untold wealth is at stake, depending on getting the oil out of the landlocked region through a warm-water port." That's why Saudi Arabia and UNOCAL had planned an oil pipeline through Afghansitan -- but abandoned it because of the political instability of the nation.

"Enter Osama bin Laden, a sworn enemy of the United States living in Afghanistan. His forces could see that the Taleban would eventually end up in the American camp if things proceeded as they had been. His bombing of U.S. embassies in East Africa (since there were none in Afghanistan) was accompanied by a message for Americans to get out of "Islamic countries." By this he specifically meant Afghanistan.

"The American response was to bomb bin Laden's outposts while carefully noting that his forces were "not supported by any state." This latter statement was an attempt to rescue the Taleban relationship while giving the Taleban leaders the message that they must ditch bin Laden. For good measure American missiles also took out a factory in the Sudan - a smoke screen for the real target of their action.

"Now matters are really in a mess. Iran has actually issued a statement supportive of the U.S. actions. The Taleban are angry, and American citizens across the globe are now the targets of the most fanatical of Islamic militants."

"Every time the United States has attempted one of these slick back-door deals, American citizens get burned. What our foreign policy community never seems to learn is that religion and ideology are as strong a motivating force in this region as money or guns. We underestimate these factors every time, and our myopia gets us in trouble every time."
