FOR THE FIRST TIME,
WEST NILE VIRUS HAS CLAIMED A VICTIM OUTSIDE THE NORTHEASTERN US |
|
A 71-year-old Atlanta woman
has died after being treated for encephalitis (once called
"sleeping sickness" because the virus can cause brain
swelling and coma).
The West Nile
form of encephalitis appeared in the US in 1999 -- mysteriously at
about the same time as the first appearance of a breed of mosquito
new to the US, according to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
Cases of West
Nile have turned up in Florida this year, but there have been no
deaths.
Deaths from
the virus have previously been confined to the northeastern
US, where nine people have died from West Nile in the past two
years.
Encephalitis
can be deadly to the elderly, children and those with compromised
immune systems.
