FORMER NEBRASKA SENATOR BOB KERRY DEFENDS HIS ROLE IN THE COMBAT SHOOTING OF VIETNAMESE CIVILIANS 30 YEARS AGO.  Kerry was on a Vietnam War Navy SEAL mission when, he says, he was fired upon, then returned fire, killing 20 women and children. But one of the Navy men in Kerry's charge says Kerry ordered the slaughter of the civilians.  Kerry denies it.

The author of the New York Times story on which the Kerry story was based, has reportedly been trying to peddle the story for years. Newsweek had turned down the story before the Times published it.

SECRETARY OF STATE COLIN POWELL SAYS CUBA'S FIDEL CASTRO IS NO LONGER "THE THREAT HE ONCE WAS" but vaguely praised Castro Thursday as having done "some good things for his people."

THE "UNBORN VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE ACT" PASSED THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES THURSDAY, in which criminals who commit violent federal crimes against pregnant women can be charged with a second crime of violence against the fetus. Republicans led the bill's passage 252-to-172. 

Democrats charge the bill is a "thinly-veiled attempt to overturn Roe v. Wade" by defining a fetus as a human being which deserves protection under the law.

SENATE REPUBLICANS DON'T HAVE ENOUGH VOTES TO PASS A BILL INTRODUCED THURSDAY that would stiffen penalties for those who injure or kill pregnant women; the bill would essentially call it a double murder in the death of the fetus. 

OIL COMPANIES SAY GASOLINE STOCKPILES ARE AT THEIR LOWEST LEVEL IN HISTORY, and with several key refineries off-line, it could mean two-dollar-a-gallon gasoline by summer, industy analysts say.

DEMOCRATS ARE ATTACKING PRESIDENT BUSH, saying his "first 100 days" prove Bush is in the pockets of the meat, oil and chemical industries. Bush is pushing for oil drilling in national parks and in Alaska Wildlife Preserves.  Advertisements making the accusations are appearing in many states. Bush had said he was "pro-environment" during the presidential campaign.

One must ask, though: are the Democrats making the accusations willing to prove they're in the pockets of no special interests, or that former President Clinton wasn't in a number of pockets? So far, no. There seems to be endemic  hypocrisy on both sides of the two-party aisle.

REUTERS-ZOGBY POLL: 18-PERCENT SAY WE'RE IN A RECESSION; 45-percent of those asked say we're headed for a recession.   More than ten-percent of those asked say they've lost a job recently or are making less money than they did two years ago. 

Good news for the economy, though: only about 15-percent say they'll be spending less money this year than last.

SALON.COM, THE "CULTURAL COMMUNICATION"  WEBSITE, PLANS TO SELL A PREMIUM SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE. For 30-dollars a year, the user will get artsy "erotic" porn, downloads of audio books, stories and poems -- and fewer advertisements, they say. 

Yahoo! recently announced it would sell porno tapes on its web service in a bid to raise revenues, and found itself in a public relations mire. Yahoo! then announced it wouldn't sell porn tapes after all. 

THIS IS NEWS -- believe it or not, because it's unprecedented for a TV network to name an actress rather than a journalist to anchor a modern newscast, much less someone who has in the past posed for easily-accessible nude photographs. It's a whole new era for TV news, courtesy of CNN.

TheLatest.Net has never linked to nude photos in the past -- and may never again -- but actress Andrea Thompson, named as a future anchor for Cable News Network's Headline News service while hundreds of more-qualified men and women are out of work, is an extraordinary case: TV newswoman as sex star.

News organizations are having a field day linking to this website of nude photos of the budding 41-year-old anchor. They just can't figure out how to work it into their news reports without seeming as unseemly as the news itself.
